What does a session entail?

There are as many styles of effective therapy as there are people on the planet. No two people respond to the same things in the same way. While a particular method may be employed with many individuals or groups, it may be used to a greater or lesser extent or in a different manner, depending on the individual needs of the client and on the particular style or skills of the psychotherapist. That being said, while I don't limit myself exclusively to them, I tend to focus my care using four therapeutic methods:

- Cognitive Behaviour Therapy

This is a form that focuses on one's thoughts and how they influence behaviour. It helps in developing skills and strategies for addressing problem areas and improving mental health

- Narrative Therapy

A focus on the individual as his or her own expert, this method helps to separate the "actor" from the "action". It helps the individual see difficulties from a more objective point of view

- Mindfulness-based therapy

We are surrounded by noise and busy-ness and can easily find ourselves lost in the shuffle. This form of therapy is an aim to reconnect us to ourselves at a basic level. This can help one to become attuned to feelings and needs, clarify thoughts and memories, and contribute to an overall sense of peace

- Family system therapy

An approach that focuses on one's interactions (and lack thereof) with one's family connections. This helps the client and practitioner to recognize, and work toward changing if necessary, patterns that have proven unhelpful. It can also be of use to recognize, and build upon, the patterns that have worked well.
