Where Do I Go From Here?

One and done, right?

Self-awareness and mental health are not a "you've got it or you don't" type of thing. They are an ongoing process. When a person moves into a new home, he or she still has to clean and maintain it. Having a child isn't the end of the story. A child needs nourishment, care, love. Similarly, your (and my) psychological and emotional needs also require ongoing attention. To seek help with exploring those needs can be beneficial in many ways:

- An impartial therapist can keep you accountable

People, in general, have a tendency to misjudge their responses to external stimuli and others' actions. They will often judge themselves leniently or too harshly. Sometimes, it is helpful to have an objective viewpoint to assist with wading through actions and responses to determine the best way to proceed in future interactions.

- Mental health is accumulative

It has been said that we build on the shoulders of giants. This is true of the internal struggle as well. Having guidance can help us to see where our strengths can be used and built upon. Following a care plan can be a way of systematically building one tool, skill, idea, etc upon another, eventually working toward a fuller sense of well-being.

- Finding a purpose in life

Most people have goals or hopes for their lives.  Some people are more focused on meeting them, as expectations.  Others see them as ideals for which to strive.  Another group of people see goals and hopes as unreachable, "pie-in-the-sky" ideas.  All of these people can benefit from psychotherapy - to receive help in recognizing unreasonable views, or to put plans in place to begin to pursue one's preferred track.

- Problem solving

No person has ever gone through life without struggle.  Occasionally, we are able to overcome those "speed bumps" with little difficulty.  For the rest of our human experiences we can benefit greatly from a person trained to help with recognizing and addressing the issue at hand.  The psychotherapist can help a person deconstruct his or her concerns, finding alternate points-of-view or, to put in place a plan of action to begin addressing them.
